A water softener is ONE of only TWO appliances that will save you
money. The other is a refrigerator!
You can expect a water softener to pay for itself if your
water hardness is greater than 7 grains per gallon (gpg) - 120 parts per million
(ppm). The greatest cost savings will be realized when poorer quality
water is treated.
You may be surprised to know that many municipal water sources provide hard
water to their customers. Typically, these range from 8 to 9 gpg and some
are over 20 gpg! So, having "city water" doesn't necessarily
mean you have soft water.
Here are some areas you can expect to cut cost:
Laundry detergent, fabric softener, bleach - 66% to 80% savings.
Window cleaner, toilet bowl cleaner, all purpose cleaners - 50% to
70% less needed.
Dishwashing detergent; hand or automatic - 50% to 66% less required.
Coffee, tea, bottled water and other beverages - up to 25% savings.
Bar soap, shampoo, conditioner, bath oils and hand lotions - up to
50% less needed.
Razor blades - typically last 50% longer.
Hot water energy - 25% to 33% less energy use, depending on the type
of heater.
Hot water tank life expectancy can be increased as much as 50%.
